Select American Express Membership Rewards members can transfer their points to Air Canada’s Aeroplan program with a 20-percent bonus through Dec. 10.
After conversion, every 1,000 points transferred result in 1,200 Aeroplan miles. The promo is not available to all Membership Rewards members. Check your email or your MR account to see if you were targeted for this promo.
Should You Transfer?
Air Canada is a Star Alliance partner, and Aeroplan has some interesting redemption opportunities. For example, a one-way flight in business class from Canada and Continental U.S. to Europe 1 comes to 55,000 miles. If you find a carrier that doesn’t impose astronomical surcharges, you can score a deal. This particular flight from Los Angeles to Frankfurt operated by Scandinavian Airlines requires 55,000 miles. By taking advantage of the promo, you can book this flight after transferring 46,000 MR points and paying minimal taxes.
Another opportunity to redeem Aeroplan miles is for flights to Asia. A one-way business-class flight from Canada and Continental U.S. to Asia 1 costs 75,000 Aeroplan miles. You can book a flight from New York City to Seoul, South Korea, for 75,000 miles, like this example on EVA Air. You will have to transfer 63,000 Membership Rewards to complete this booking, and the taxes are also low.
In Conclusion
A speculative transfer is rarely a good idea, and we know that Air Canada will cut ties with Aeroplan by 2020 and launch a new loyalty program. If you have an immediate redemption in mind, I say go for it, but otherwise you might want to hold off on transferring points because most transfers are irreversible.
Will you take advantage of the promotion to book a flight with Aeroplan? If so, where are you going?
