The Best Way to Earn 5X Points on Your Purchases Next Quarter

The Chase Freedom Credit Card is one of my favorite cash-back credit cards. It earns 5 percent cash back in rotating quarterly categories, but because I have a Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, I earn 5X Ultimate Rewards points on every purchase in the bonus categories instead. These points can be transferred to Chase’s travel partners for maximum value.

Depending on the quarter, it can be easy to maximize your earnings with the Chase Freedom card. For example, this quarter’s categories (January through March) include gas stations, internet, cable and cell phone service, as well as mobile payments, including Chase Pay, Android Pay, Samsung Pay and Apple Pay. With that many choices, I would be surprised if you didn’t max out your bonus cap of $1,500 this quarter.

The upcoming quarter’s (April through June) bonus categories include PayPal payments, Chase Pay and grocery stores, and you can activate them now. Depending on your shopping habits, this category can be maximized as well.

How to Maximize Next Quarter’s Bonus Categories

With Samsung Pay in play this quarter, earning 5X UR points per dollar everywhere has been like taking points from a baby. Chase Pay is a little more difficult to utilize because not as many retailers accept the payment method. For example, Walmart.com takes Chase Pay payments online only, so you can buy gift cards from the website to maximize your spending. To find other merchants where you can use Chase Pay, consult with this page.

PayPal payments can be maximized if your shop on eBay frequently. Simply connect your Freedom Card to the payment processor and earn quintuple points for every dollar spent. Keep in mind that person-to-person money transfers using a credit card incur a fee of 2.9 percent of the amount sent plus 30 cents.

As for grocery stores, Walmart and Target are excluded from the bonus but remember that you can maximize your Walmart purchases by buying gift cards from Walmart.com via Chase Pay.

What is your favorite bonus category for the next quarter?
