Recently, I went on a trip to Los Cabos with a few of my travel writer friends. We spent four nights on the beach, staying at the Marquis Los Cabos Resort & Spa all-inclusive resort. We also took part in a few activities including a cooking class and a sailing trip. All in all, it was a blast!
While I have been to Mexico many times, this was my first time to the Los Cabos area or to Cabo San Lucas. In the past, I’ve stayed mostly in the Riviera Maya area with memorable stays at the Viva Wyndham Maya, JW Marriott Cancun, and a rental condo. I also went to Mazatlan on another trip, and I stayed at a really nice all-inclusive hotel, the El Cid Marina Beach.
While I wasn’t sure I would love Los Cabos as much as I enjoy the rest of Mexico, I was very impressed by beauty of the area, the hospitality, and the wide range of things to do and see. Here are six things I really loved about Los Cabos, and why I want to go back.
#1: Flora Farms is amazing.
One of the best thing we did on this trip was book a cooking class at a Los Cabos destination called Flora Farms. While Los Cabos is mostly desert, Flora Farms is a green oasis brimming with gorgeous flowers and fresh organic fruits and veggies.
The farm has its own restaurant and bar, and they host cooking classes where you can learn to make a range of delicious Mexican meals. We learned how to make two types of salsa and homemade guacamole, and I came home with some new cooking skills.
#2: Hotels range from affordable to luxury.
The Marquis Los Cabos Resort & Spa is more on the luxury side, but I would absolutely recommend it if you’re looking for an upscale adults-only stay at an all-inclusive resort with rates that start at around $475 per night.
Fortunately, there are a ton of points hotels you can book in Los Cabos, including the Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos all-inclusive for 20,000 points (double occupancy, but additional guests will cost 10,000 points per night each). IHG Rewards also has an all-inclusive resort in Los Cabos I’m dying to try. You can book the Holiday Inn Los Cabos all-inclusive resort for 40,000 points per night, and remember that kids twelve and under are free.
#3: I love seeing whales and sea lions!
While I do love the clear waters of the Caribbean, I probably love animals more. There were whales swimming by our hotel, and we saw a whale and some sea lions on our day cruise. The fact this area has so much unique sea life makes it pretty special in my eyes.
#4: The food was some of the best I’ve had in Mexico.
I love Mexican food anyway (especially spicy Mexican food), but I really felt like the food in Los Cabos was crazy-good. I had lots of fresh produce, tons of spicy salsas and dips, and some of the best cocktails I have ever had. The best meal of our trip was a lunch we had at ME Cabo by Melia. We had several different types of tacos, a to-die-for soup, and bread with some dipping sauce I would probably bathe in if I could.
#5: I love the party atmosphere.
While Los Cabos is more upscale than I imagined it would be, there is still quite the party atmosphere with plenty of bars and clubs. We walked around the art district for a while and found tons of unique bars with interesting design and cutting edge Mezcal drinks. I like to have fun, so I really appreciated all the nightlife!
#6: Los Cabos is easy to get to.
I flew American on a paid fare to Cabos, but there are plenty of ways to get there with airline miles, too. First off, Southwest Airlines flies there from select U.S. cities. Flights on Southwest from my home airport of Indianapolis to Los Cabos can be as low as 18,000 points round-trip (plus airline taxes and fees).
All the other major airlines fly there as well. In addition to Southwest, two other good options include American Airlines for as little as 30,000 miles round-trip or even United MileagePlus for as little as 35,000 miles round-trip.
Have you ever been to Los Cabos? If so, what did you love about it?
