Recently, I went on an adults-only trip to Key West, Florida. I stayed in an extremely frugal hotel for adults ages 18+ called NYAH (Not Your Average Hotel), and it was perfect for adults on a budget.
Not only was the property ideally situated in Key West, but it had rooms with bunk beds that sleep up to six. There were three big pools and several hot tubs, plus a happy hour with free snacks and cheap drinks that started at 4:20 p.m. every day. It was a simple hotel, but it was also the ideal place to stay with friends for a bachelor party or a weekend of partying on Duval Street.
6 Frugal Things to Do in Key West
This was actually my first time in Key West, and I really loved it! While it doesn’t have the gorgeous beaches of my beloved Caribbean, Key West has a unique style of its own that makes it worth visiting. We also did a ton of frugal activities on our trip. Here are some fun (and cheap) things to do while you’re in town:
Shop and people watch on Duval Street.
Key West’s Duval Street reminds me a lot of Bourbon St. in New Orleans. There are tons of bars and clubs, restaurants, and the occasional strip club or clothing-optional establishment. The music is loud, people are acting crazy, and there are all kinds of shenanigans to watch.
It’s a lot calmer during the day, and there are plenty of shops to check out if you don’t like to drink.
Go kayaking or paddle boarding.
I like kayaking if the water is calm enough, and the water is ideal for this sport in Key West. I took a kayaking tour with Lazy Dog that costs $50 for two hours. We found wild conch and nurse sharks and got some exercise in during the journey.
Tour a distillery.
If you love spirits, there is plenty to enjoy in Key West. One thing I did that I enjoyed was tour the Ernest Hemingway distillery that makes Papa’s Pilar rum. This tour is offered every hour starting at 11:00 a.m. at the distillery, and it’s only $10 with samples included.
Tour the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum.
I also took the time to tour the Ernest Hemingway home. I am not a huge Hemingway fan or anything, but I still found the history and his story interesting. The home also has over 50 cats, many of which have an extra 6th toe. I will pretty much visit anywhere if cats or dogs are involved. Entry here is only $14 for adults and $6 for children, and it’s definitely worth it.
Visit the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory.
I love flowers and nature, so I really enjoyed my visit to the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory in Key West. There are thousands of unique and beautiful butterfly species here along with many types of birds. This is an easy way to spend an afternoon because you just pay to get in then walk through and see all the animals. It’s also fairly inexpensive at just $12 per adult.
Visit the southernmost point of the U.S.
Last but not least, you can’t visit Key West without getting your picture taken at the southernmost point of the country. Doing so is free, although you may have to wait in line for a while. We got there at around 11:00 a.m. and our wait was around 30 minutes. It was hot, but it was worth it!
What do you like to do in Key West? What would you add to this list?
