Ways to Earn Free Hotel Stays With the New Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card

Last month, along with the new Marriott/Starwood merger details, we learned that Chase would release a new co-branded Marriott credit card: the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card. That card is available now. And it comes with a hefty sign-up bonus for new cardmembers.

Perks of the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card

For a limited time, the new card is offering 100,000 Marriott points to members who sign up for the card and spend $5,000 on purchases in the first three months of membership.

Here are some of the card’s benefits:

  • 6X points per dollar spent at Marriott and Starwood hotels
  • 2X points per dollar spent on everything else
  • free night award every account anniversary (capped at 35,000 points)
  • automatic Silver Elite status
  • Gold Elite status after spending $35,000 on the card annually
  • 15 elite night credits (starting in 2019)
  • $95 annual fee (not waived for the first year)

Who’s Eligible for the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card?

The offer is not available to current members of the Marriott Rewards Premier card or those who have received a bonus on the card in the last 24 months. Additionally, Chase’s 5/24 rule likely applies. If you’re not familiar with the rule, it means that you will not be approved for many Chase credit cards if you have opened five or more credit cards with any issuer in the last two years. If you’re over 5/24 and have been approved for this card, please let us know in the comments.

Where Can I Redeem My Free Night Certificate?

Both the new and improved Starwood and Marriott credit cards will offer a free night certificate upon account anniversary, and the night will be capped at 35,000 points. We know that when the new program launches in August, 35,000 points will get you a free night at a Category 5 property. However, we do not know which properties will be categorized as such.

In August, seven hotel categories will be available for bookings, and some properties will move up to Category 8 some time in 2019. At this point, though, there’s no way to tell how lucrative the free night voucher would be and whether it would be worth the $95 annual fee. Here’s to hoping the new award chart includes some great properties (i.e. worth renewing a credit card for) when it’s unveiled to the public.
